What is orienteering?

Orienteering ; It is a sport that aims to reach the control points with orange-white flags as soon as possible by finding direction with the help of a map and compass on a specially designed natural track . In order to be successful in this sport, which everyone can participate in, it is necessary to be constantly active and in full concentration , both physically and mentally . There is no marked track and no leader to follow , the competitor is on his own. It is also important that the competitor should run quickly , think while running , follow the map and the compass , but not get lost by chasing another competitor . When the contestants reach the checkpoints , they prove that they have reached the checkpoint by pressing the special chips they carry with them.
Orienteering History

a military training in Sweden in the 1890s and did not go beyond Scandinavia until the 1950s . It was tried to be popularized by a major from the Swedish army, and although the spread process was slow at first, orienteering sport was accepted as a sport all over the world in time . It attracted attention in Britain , Canada and Australia in the 1960s , advanced to the United States and New Zealand in 1970, and South Africa in 1981 .
The International Orienteering Federation was established in 1961 with the participation of 10 countries. The first world championship held in Norway in 1962 was called the European Championship since there were no member states other than European countries . Today, the International Orienteering Federation has more than 60 member countries, including Turkey.
Orienteering in Turkey

Turkey started its official organization in the field of orienteering in 2001. In 2002, the Orienteering Vice Presidency was established under the Mountaineering Federation of the General Directorate of Youth and Sports . Although official dates point to 2001, Turkey’s orienteering adventure goes back a little further. In addition to being carried out by the institutions affiliated to the Turkish Armed Forces and some public institutions since the 1970s, orienteering groups were established with the participation of the public in 1999 and operated in Ankara and Istanbul. After the Orienteering Deputy Presidency was connected to the Scouting Federation in 2004 , it was affiliated to the Orienteering Federation , which was established on 19 June 2006 . It organized its first general assembly as an autonomous federation in March 2007. Antalya and Istanbul 5-day races, which have witnessed international participation, are the most important orienteering activities in Turkey. As of the 2011 racing season, Cappadocia participated in orienteering races that gave points to the world championship .
Orienteering Types
